Belhaven, NC is a waterfront community located on the Pungo river (part of the Intercoastal Waterway). It has a population of about 2000 and boasts a library, chamber of commerce, downtown area, hospital, numerous marinas, town common, recreational areas, museum, police. fire and EMS service. Belhaven is the perfect place to live if your looking for a low cost, low crime, low taxed area. Boat building, farming, fishing, crabiing, and hunting are the principle industries supporting Belhaven, however, the larger towns of Washington, Plymouth, and Greenville are only a short drive if you need to get some large town action every now and then.
Each year Belhaven hosts the largest 4th of July parade and events held in eastern North Carolina. Pirates on the Pungo is an annual hospital fund raising event featuring a sailing regatta and community dinner. The Belhaven Museum is listed as one of the most unusual in the nation. Lake Mattemusheet, the largest natural lake in North Carolina, is home to one of the largest waterfowl reserves in the nation and Hyde County, just eight mile down the road, is world renown as one of the most fruitful hunting areas. After a 25 minute ride you can board a ferry and sail to Ocracoke Island, listed as one of the top 3 beaches in US or you may jump in your own boat and be there in about an hour under motor or 8 hours under sail.
